Create a Calendar

The key difference between an online course and a course that you would take on campus is that you have to structure yourself.

If you were taking a course on campus during the summer, you would have to be present for 6 hours of class time.  You would also have to spend around 2 hours preparing for each class.  In this course, your 6 +4 hours of attendance and preparation  might look like this:

Notes about the Sample Weekly Calendar of Attendance:
  • Attendance = logging on.
  • In a face to face class, attendance includes just showing up and listening.  This is part of your role in this class, but "speaking" is also a critical component.
  • Your 6 hours of attendance may be allocated differently across the week but it is highly recommended that you spend at least an hour on Sunday (denoted by the asterisk *), as Selia posts the plan for the week each Sunday.
  • It is highly recommended that you attend class everyday.  However, I found having one day away from the class (denoted in this calendar on Saturday) helpful to regroup, recollect and reflect.  Scheduling this day near the end of the week is probably best.
  • Using this method, if something comes up unexpectedly during one of your scheduled periods of class, you will know approximately how much catch up time you have to do.

Minimum Time Requirement

At a minimum, expect to spend 10 to 11 hours weekly devoted to CTL1799.  You may spend less than this (but more often you will spend more than this).  Budgeting for this time will help you manage the course throughout the 6 weeks.

And where will you be spending all this time? Primarily interacting with the primary class resources described here.
